Does anyone still Ask Jeeves? Did he have to retire?

It’s been a while since we’ve had a simple monster of the week episode, and here we have the second one in a row! It’s nice to get back to basics once in a while. This one doesn’t start out as a case, but as a road trip to check out a message left on one of Bobby’s old phones. Turns out some rich old lady in Connecticut left him something in her will, for him or his closest descendants. Figuring they’re the closest things to his living relatives, they’re off to the East Coast.

Thank you, everyone involved in "Supernatural: The Musical" and most especially everyone involved in "Supernatural: The Show". Thanks for the road so far, 10 years and 200 episodes.

Thank you, everyone involved in “Supernatural: The Musical” and most especially everyone involved in “Supernatural: The Show”. Thanks for the road so far, 10 years and 200 episodes.

This is the 200th episode of a show that had a rough time of it in its early years. Longtime fans used to hold their breath every year when renewals were announced, never sure Supernatural would be on the list. I started watching late in Season Two, so my first full season was Three, and that was cut short by the writers’ strike. Lots of shows suffered, or died completely, at that time. Considering that was the season Dean was dragged off to Hell by hellhounds and left strung up by meat hooks and chains, screaming for Sam, it was a scary time for fans. When would the strike end? Would the show get picked up? Would we be left forever wondering if Sam had been able to save Dean? Fortunately, all those questions had answers, and good ones, at that. Happily, we then got Season Four, arguably one of the best–if not The Best–season, and the show and fans have not had much to worry about since. The writers have said this episode is a love letter to the fans, and boy, they weren’t a-fibbing. Let’s take a look at exactly how, shall we?

Aaaand....ACTION!

Aaaand….ACTION!

What do Sam and Dean Winchester do when they decide to take some down time from hunting? Sit around beside a lake drinking beer and wearing Wayfarers. I kept expecting Dean to declare “I’m so bored!” with every second that passed. He settles for giving Sam crap about his messed up elbow(didn‘t Castiel say it was his shoulder?). You would think they would at least be fishing.

I may be tied to a chair in the middle of a Devil's trap, while you inject me with sanctified blood, but dang, my hair looks fantastic!

I’ll be honest–the first two episodes of this new season did not inspire me to write anything about them. Dean is now a demon, out having a good time with Crowley. Crowley wants them to settle down and set up Hell-keeping together. Sam is looking for Dean and doing sketchy things in his pursuit. There’s also a new character, Cole, looking for Dean as well. He has vengeance on his mind. Sounds promising, but somehow didn’t grab me.

You don't have the spell for summoning Crowley memorized by now, Dean? Still with the books?

Supernatural does season finales really, really well, and this year’s is no exception. From the traditional “Carry On My Wayward Son” to the last “Holy crap!” seconds, it was a solid addition to the finale pantheon. Let’s review, shall we? This may get lengthy.

Stairway to Heaven

Go towards the light. There’s a party there. Seriously, streamers and punch and everything.

Another excellent episode, running up to the season finale! More betrayal! More machinations! Lots of booing and hissing at Metatron! One of the things this show does really well is create villains we love to hate. Azazel, Lucifer, Dick Roman, and currently Metatron–all reveled in their evilness, and we loved it. (Crowley not included in that bunch, as he’s not evil for evil’s sake, he just takes advantage of available resources for his own personal gain, wherever they fall on the moral spectrum. Mostly bad, occasionally good. Let’s call him…a juicy character. And shady. And untrustworthy. But juicy.)

King of the Damned

Hold on, what do you think I am, a bloody Winchester huggable toy?

Now this is a proper episode of Supernatural! Blackmail! Betrayal! Time travel! The demons are at odds! The angels are at odds! The Winchesters are in the middle, (for the most part)not at odds! All the players are on the board–well, except Metatron–and the plot is actually moving! This is the episode I’ve been waiting for!
